Picture of a folder with a question mark?

When I try to start my IMac 21.5 I get a picture of a folder with a question mark in the middle of it and nothing works.What do I try?

That means there is a software issue on your startup disk. I'm betting you have never done any disk cleanup, maintenance, and repairs, from a software perspective (you can also do a fair amount of disk cleanup yourself). Also, are you making backups to an external device?

What you can do is boot your Mac to the (hidden) Recovery HD partition, This link explians how to do that:

Once you get the screen shown on that link, select the "Disk Utility" option, and then have it Verify and Repair your drive, both at the Volume (ie, top) and Partition (ie, secondary) levels.
