Pages problems

Stupid question...
I am new to mac. I can navigate Pages because of its similarities to Word, but I am having some major annoyances. the biggest: I want to copy a lot of text into a new document, then insert additional text between the lines of that document. Every time I hit return, Pages changes the size and the font type of the text below it. This is incredibly obnoxious. I just want to insert a line. I don't want it to do anything else to the text. Why would I want multiple fonts in the same document? It's enraging. I just want a LINE. I also want to be able to highlight text and change it to bold or italics and increase the font size, but I don't have problems doing that when i want to. I just don't like pages doing it FOR ME. Please help!

You need to learn a little about text styles.

After you have pasted in your text, with the cursor in the new text, show the Format sidebar, the paint brush icon on the toolbar.
Then next to Body there should be an large blue Update button
click it

If this doesn't fix the problem than you may also need to click the More tab and in Following Paragraph Style choose same.
