I don't know what animal my operating systems are. The iMac is 10.9.2 and the Macbook is 10.6.8.

I read that Time Machine will copy everything on one computer to the other. Is that legal?

Hello and welcome.

iMac 10.9.2 is Mavericks
MacBook 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard

What do you mean by "Is that legal?"

It's a scary idea but you could backup one computer then use that drive to re-image the other.

Yes, you CAN use it in that fashion. However, you should still technically obey the licensing requirements of all the software/data on your computers.

Time Machine is actually designed to enable you to restore all your software/data to a new hard drive in case of failure, not for copying/imaging purposes.

No, you can use the same drive. Time Machine will make a separate backup of each Mac on the drive. However, you can only connected it to one at a time.
