I saved a document to my hard drive through Microsoft Word. When I tried to open it an error
came up saying it couldn't be open because of only being 255 characters. How can I rename
the document and open it somewhere else? Help please. And thank you Cory for answering
me!

It sounds like Word ate your document, In your Applications folder there is an App called TextEdit, drag and drop the doc on that.
but I think its damaged.

Thanks for your input Kaveman. I did as you suggested but still cannot transfer to another file. The document will open in Word, Text Edit, PDF file but then can only send the document as an attachment in a email. Is there any way I can rename the document to send it as a different file? Thank you.

Select it in Finder, Press Return and Type the new name.

but I suspect its actually the series of Folders you have it in that is being a part of the path name.
To send it save it to the Desktop with a short name the send that.

If you open the file using Text Edit then select all the text (⌘ a) and copy/paste into an new Text Edit doc, you can save it however you like, if I understand the issue correctly ...
