No alert sounds for incoming mail

As compared to the issues of others this seems like small potatoes, but is continues to be irritating. Can you help?
I had been using Thunderbird for a while when the incoming alert just stopped. I switched to webmail for other reasons and the lack-of-alert issue continued. I'm now using the Outlook web app and still no alert.
I'm using a Mac Mini for now, I've looked at the sound sys. pref. and the port is correct and working, the sound level hasn't mysteriously changed and the external speakers are working. I also don't see a place in the app that addresses alerts or sound.

Thoughts?

Apple computer, Apple OSX, why not use Apple Mail?

Not sure if I'm missing something but have you looked in Thunderbird ~> Preferences ~> General to see what is selected to actually play when new mail arrives? The same would apply for Apple Mail.app
