new unknown menu bar icon

Hate to sound foolish, but anyone know what this new grey Messages-like icon could be (in my 10.8.4 menu bar (right side of attachment)?

There is nothing suspicious in Preference Panes, Login Items, or any recognizable process in Activity Monitor. I cannot left or right click on the icon or move it. It seems to come and go as if NSA PRISM is spying on me.

Any input wold be appreciated...

I got it - Google Hangouts!
Once I logged in, the icon turend black (active).

Hate Google taking over my desktop...
