My Mac OSX gave me several "snaps" today and twice just froze with red colored columns. Is this a new kind of malware. My Avast scanner didn't pick up any viruses twice.

Hello and welcome.

-Which model Mac?
-Which version of Mac OS X?
-What application were you using?
-Did the freezing require you to power off and restart?
-Were the red colored columns uniform and/or aligned symmetrically, or were they randomly spaced and obscure the images/text beneath them?

Mac OS X
Version 10.7.5
Was watching YouTube once. Watching MSNBC.com another time.
Yes, I powered off and on.
They were not uniform, but kind of jagged and only partially obscured text/images underneath.

thanks.

OK...thanks.

It could be either a software or hardware issue.

-Has this just started and did you recently update the OS or install new software?
-Both times were when watching streaming video? Safari, Firefox, Chrome?
-Do you have all Apple software updates installed and is Adobe Flash up to date?
-Is the Mac a portable or a desktop?

It happened last week for the first time. I went to computer store where I bought this refurbished MacBook Pro laptop. They adjusted something and now it has been working well for several days.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like it might have been a loose connection internally.

Glad it's working for you.
