Need to backup

Hi;
This would be my first post for help. I have a 2012 mac book pro that I use for mostly pictures and non work stuff. It's running slow now, over 80% full Hard drive. I got a 1TB western digital hard i bought a couple years ago with just a few files of pictures on it. Could anybody walk me though backing up and/or removing some of this to the external drive. I've been LUCKY so far without a backup but feel the time is near. Running Yosemite with latest up dates.

That's exactly what I was going to refer him to! Of course, the notion of backing up actually has quite a few tasks "linked" to it. I of course have previously stated in detail what I go through regarding my disk maintenance/repair/backup processing. In fact, I am going to do just that in a few minutes (could not do it yesterday, as my wife and I went to a get together for most of the day).

I am willing to advise this individual about what it takes to do a backup, but I don't have time at this very moment.

But yeah, that thread is an excellent place to start.
