I have an imac. recently whenever I try to delete or move o a folder documents downloaded from the internet, the computer simply refuses to do so giving me the message "The item is being used by another task right now". This is even after I restart the computer. Can someone help me on what to do.

Secondly, when i download software from the net, the computer refuses to recognise it at all. I have tried to download Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox with no success at all. Pls if you know how i can configure the comp so that I can successfully download I will really appreciate.

Kind Regards to all!

Hi there !

can you give a little more info !

What type of computer have you got and what version of Mac OS is on it ?

It may be that you are on an older version of the Mac OS that Safari and Firefox won't run on...

..let us know your Specs and we'll be able to help !

Re: To Ric. Here is more information.

Thanks a million for replying so fast. I am indeed grateful. The machine is PowerMac PC G4 with a 700 Mhz processor running Mac OSX 10.2. It has one processor and the bus speed is 100Mhz. The memory is 128 MB.

The machine model is indicated as Imac (vesrion = 2.1).

Thanks again and kind regards

Hi,

It sounds like you have "Permissions" problem...

You need to find your original CD's that came with your computer, stick in disk 1 and restart, while the computer is restarting keep the 'c' key held down, this forces the computer to 'boot' from the cd ! (You can let go once the Mac has booted)

When the System has booted, you need to quit out of the installer, and open up Disk Utility (on the CD !), (/Applications/Utilities/). Select your Mac OS X startup volume in the column on the left of the Disk Utility window, then click the First Aid tab. Click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

This will through up loads of messages, don't worry !

Repeat this procedure a couple of times and the reboot without holding down the 'c' key.

Now in theory, your 'Permissions' have been set back to normal !

Try and delete the relevant files/folders. If they still won't delete we will do it another way, via the Terminal.

If you want you can try the above but just run Disk Utility from your Mac without booting from the CD, this is quicker, but it normally won't repair 'all' on the Startup Volume..

Re: Thanks to Ric and one more problem

Thanks again. You are very helpful. Now I have another serious problem that you may help me with. I have been reading and sending mail on Yahoo without problem. However, lately when I open compose or reply I get the message: "Internet Explorer Script Alert. Unable to add event for listener click to undefined" That is followed by another message that reads "unable to add event listener for keypress to input".
After that I am not able to type in text in the message text box or to paste anything on it. the only place that I am able to type on is the address bar and subject areas. Can you assist on this?

Re: Thanks to Ric and one more problem

Hi,

I would do the "Repair Permissions" first and then see if you are still getting the error messages from Internet Explorer...

...the "Permissions" affect everything on your Mac, so give that a go first and then let's see if the other errors are still showing up...

regards
