My macbook air's airport card is 'undetected'

as the name suggests my macbook air currently claims that my airport card isn't installed (even though it's been working fine up to this point). When I open network preferences it does show my airport card, but doesn't allow me to turn it on or infact let me do anything. Can anyone help?
