I am trying to organize my photos and videos by years and months. (since I have too many currently on my laptop) Therefore, I have the idea that I can have a folder for each year and within those folders, one for each month. Then could drag-n-drop photos from iPhoto to those folders on my external storage.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or comments?

Smart folders? How do you make them and what makes them 'smart'? I want to have them organized on the storage drive for easy access to online projects etc.

Why not just copy your whole Library?

It sounds to me like you are losing all the power of iPhoto. Its very easy for iPhoto to swap libraries.

Ok, so I can use smart folders, what about the file structure? With iTunes, I can look up an artist and have the folder of all the persons music with subfolders for each album. I was thinking the same for photos & videos. Btw, if iPhoto organizes photos, and iTunes does music, how can I save and organize my home movies? I have lots of little 1-2 minute clips of my daughters that I compile together & edit and burn to a DVD, but I'd like to still save the files for later. My laptop doesn't Have enough space to keep them all on. Suggestions?

If you are looking to manage you photos beyond what iPhoto can do I suggest you look at Aperture. Thats what I use for my large and complex usage.

iTunes 11 has a new option in the Info > Options > Media Kind > Home Movies.
