I'm stuck...

I'm using an old iMac 5, 1 on 10.6.8 and I was googling how to install mavericks, when I came across Multibeast.

Needless to say I read all the instructions listed and thought, "great, that's for me."

So I downloaded Multibeast and set it away to install.

Then the computer crashed and it wouldn't restart...

Now I realise it's for PC installation and I feel like a prize prat.

I'm running on Snow Leopard and it took ages to get into safe mode (which I finally found out you did by holding shift down - which I was fine after digging out an old keyboard instead of the bluetooth one. It's not been my day...)

Yes I'm a newbie, yes I'm an idiot, but now I need help.

I need to get back to before the multibeast incident. I don't have the time capsule set up.

What I need from someone is a step by step guide (in English, not techno-speak) for how I can get it fixed.

I'm guessing from what I've seen online is that it's to do with the kext files, but I'm lost.

Please Please help...

Take pity on us idiots and instead of being superior and smug like I've seen on so many other sites, just help me out...

Thanks,

Sam

Hello and welcome.

We won't laugh at you, we'll help you.

First, a few questions:

-It sounds like you can boot to the desktop in Safe Mode?
-Do you have a lot of user data that you would like to save? How much?
-Do you have an external HD that we could use to copy your user data to?
-Do you have the Snow Leopard install disc? Is it grey or have the Snow Leopard picture on it?

Let us know and we'll try to get you back up and running,

Yup. I'm in safe mode as we speak.

I do have a fair bit of data. Most of it is held on a network attached drive though. Which I cant access anymore.

I have a couple of memory sticks but most of what I have on this computer is a back up of the shared network drive so it's no great loss.

No I don't have the start up disc.

There are other working macs in the office if that's any help.

Hi,

You do need the install disks,
Call Apple Sales and ask to speak to a Product Specialistt, or possibly look on Amazon.

Is the iMac an intel or PPC possibly think about Snow Leopard which you can still easily get from Apple

Intel Core 2 Duo.

It's running on Snow leopard as it stands. Would it be worthwhile getting lion and upgrading?? If I've got to buy the disks it makes sense to me to at least take the mac up a level...

Hi,

Not sure why I was thinking of Leopard, you will still need a fully functional OS X Snow Leopard before being able to upgrade to Lion from the App Store, because that is the upgrading OS X platform.
But I personally thought SL was a great OS X.:)
And as I said Snow Leopard disks are still sold by Apple for about $16.

Hope this helps you decide.

Thanks. I'll see what I can find in the UK and hopefully re-install it. I'm guessing I need to copy everything over to a external drive and that'll sort the problem.
