how do I play movie downloads using QuickTime? Or is there another download I should use. Cannot play download files MOV only WMV.

The absolute best player you can use is VLC Media Player. It can play just about any format downloaded. You can get it from here:

Assuming you are using a "modern" version of the Mac OS (that is, OS q0.6 or above), you must download version 2.2.4.
