So i got a 160 gig macbook last christmas. When i got it of course it had about 148 gigs on it. Well recently my external speakers stopped working so i had it repaired. When i got it back they said they put a new headset input guy and a new motherboard. I was looking through my files and it says i have only 112 gigs left free.
I have downloaded a few widgets, done less than 5 papers and downloaded some garageband update.
Any IDEA as to where 36 gigs magically went? Should i take it back to the mac store and ask if they installed something wrong?

"WhatSize" is one of several apps which analyses your HD and displays a report on what is on your HD and where it is and how big/small the file/s is/are.

Dooley, that told me nothing that i did not already know. It didn't locate any files that didn't fit in or seemed oddly large. Thanks though bro.

If you've been using either iMovie or iPhoto, these apps have their own independent Trash which if not emptied can reduce the amount of available HD space.

Another place to check is to launch iTunes and go to View ~> Show Duplicates. You may have a few. If you find you do and are going to start deleting the dupes, check before you delete by playing the song first. Sometimes a song may show as a duplicate but when you hit the play button an exclamation mark displays to the left of the song title which means that the link is dead.

iPhoto trash emptied. I don't use iMovie. iTunes duplicates gone. I went up about .4 of a gig. I'm up to 113.1 when i should have about 140 - 145 gigs.
