When I lost the credit that I use to pay Apple, I cancelled the card and ordered a new one – long time coming. In the interim I got a message that my rented icloud space was exhausted and I must buy more. When the new card arrived, I tried to use it to buy more iCloud storage, but the card was refused with the absurd explanation that it was not a card that could be used in Portugal (my home country). I then tried (incorrectly, see below) to register the new card with Apple with the result that my entire desktop contents disappeared.
I have a very untidy desktop, but I know where everything is and the entries are effectively an index on the mass of data that is my work and my hobbies. My enquiries so far would suggest that my desktop data is in “iCloud Drive (Archive)”. My user does indeed have this folder, plus a folder “iCloud Drive (Archive) – 1” . Some of my files and folders are in them, but mostly not. The last ten years of my work is not to be seen.
The error I made was -IMO – excusable. I wanted to update my payment info – with the new card details. The screen I got was as follows :
Start Quote
Payment Information
Update your credit card information or billing address. [but this screen IS NOT for updating credit card info – it is grossly misleading ] The instructions continue… :
If you make any changes here all your payment records on file will be removed. [OK – but I only had that one card and it can never work again so…by all means remove it. I then overwrote the displayed details with those of the new card] - continues…. :
To retain your payment methods use iTunes or go to the Manage Payments section on your iPhone or iPad. [OK - but I DON'T want to retain the failed payment method, and I DO want to give details of the new card. How else can the instructions be followed by e.g. someone who does not use iTunes or possess an iPhone or an iPad? (I suspect that such people exist).
end
Having since supplied my new card details (correctly), and having thereafter bought a lot of additional iCloud storage, nothing has changed, even after a fresh boot-up.
Can someone please help me to restore my work and other desktop data?
