Make the name of a file unchangeable?

Hello. I have a server. My fellow coworkers need a file structure where a certain folder cannot be renamed. I know it's possible, I've seen it before, but I can't see how to make this work. My coworkers need to be able to read / write files inside of the folder, but the folder itself cannot be renamed.

I've tried looking online and cannot find anything Mac-specific. Only windows / PC solutions. Can anyone help?

Thank you very much.

Hello and welcome.

We need a little more information to help you out.

-Is it a Mac server? Acutal server, or a Mac with file sharing turned on?
-What model/version of OS X/OS X Server are you running?
-Is it a local machine?

It's an actual server, but it's more or less just a place where we store files. I'm looking to make a file structure locally, and just drag it onto the server.

We're using OS X ~ Don't know any information about the server specifically.
Local machine ~ let's just say yes for simplicity.

OK.

If you create a folder/directory on the server for file sharing in a group, the folder/directory name shouldn't be able to be changed. Files can be added/changed/deleted within that folder however, as long as the permissions are set correctly.

You can't create a folder structure and drag it to the server. You have to create that structure on the server itself.

We really need some info on the server itself - brand/model/ OS version to really get you the correct answer and steps.

Do you have an IT person or server administrator in your group?

We do but I don't know any information about it. Could you please perhaps phrase what I need to be done into IT terms so he knows what to do? He's not on site, but he'll be in tomorrow and I can pass it on then.

If you tell the IT person that you want a folder/directory created for file sharing among the group, they should know how to set it up properly on your server.

Not much more I can do to help until you speak with the IT person.

Alright~ Thank you. Is there a way to just make a local file unrenameable?

You can lock a file or folder, and it cannot be renamed. It can be opened, but it cannot be changed or deleted.
