Mail quits

When I open mail it quits after 2 seconds. I have 2008 Mac Desktop with ElCapitan loaded in it.

Which version of El Capitan do you have? There were some issues with Apple's Mail program and El Capitan, V10.11, when it first came out. The latest version of El Capitan is 10.11.2. You can get the Combo Updater from here, which will take you to V 10.11.2:

(I don't use Apple's Mail program, preferring Outlook. Outlook works fine for me).
