Mail notification

The mail icon in the dock usually shows the number of emails waiting to be read and this number then reduces or disappears as mails are opened. Mine shows the digit "1" after the mail has been opened and read. How do I get rid of that pesky "1"?

El Capitan 10.11.6 nothing in junk no rules.

-Any unread in the Trash folder?
-Do you have any folders you store Mail in that may have an unread email?
-Have you quit Mail, restarted the Mac, and launched Mail again?
