Mail has no default to open Text/Plain attachments

Mail recognizes Text/Plain attachments with a known suffix and will open them with a double click, but that does not seem sufficient to comply with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) standard’s requirement for handling MIME mediatypes (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_type).

Mail will not open Text/Plain attachments with an unknown (to Mail) suffix with a double click, you are told there is no default application, you can then choose Application, and scroll down to open with TextEdit. I do not remember having to do this on versions before El Capitan (maybe I had always received Text/Plain attachments with a known suffix previously).

Mail is the only email app I have used which does not open Text/Plain attachments (irrespective of suffix) with a double click in a text editor. Thunderbird honors the double click but you don't need to because Thunderbird conveniently shows you the attachment text inline.

Not only is there no way to open Text/Plain attachments in Mail on a double click, there seems to be no way to set Text/Edit as the default to use. Finder can assign TextEdit as the default for a specific suffix, but not as a default for the MIME mediatype of Text/Plain.

Does anyone know if there is a way to assign a Mail default to open MIME Text/Plain attachments as text?

Note: I asked about this at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250372244?page=1 a few days ago, but nothing helpful yet which is why I am trying here too.

Hello and welcome.

That isn't something I have come across, but I will look into it and let you know if I find anything helpful.

Hi Cory,

Looks like there is nothing known about this. My daughter had the same problem on her iphone and there is an app to open text/plain attachments.
