This can be caused by several things: Disk Space is low A corrupt email Hard drive or other hardware issue A few troubleshooting questions: Which model Mac? Which exact version of El Capitan - i.e. 10.11.6? Did you recently upgrade to El Capitan or apply a software update? How many email accounts are setup? Have you had other issues before this happened?
