Quite suddenly, me mac book went berserk- (macbook pro, 13 inch, mid 2012, os10.10.2 yosemite ) Firstly the dictionary started interfering with whatever i wrote, appearing at almost every point, then the mouse cursor became very unstable and would run off from where it was pointing, pages enlarged to the point of unusability, and in general the computer has become very unstable and hardly usable. Please help

It seems like you need to 1) Verify and Repair Permissions, and 2) Verify and Repair your internal hard drive. You need to use Disk Utility to do that, but it is best if is ran "externally". Hopefully, when you installed Yosemite, the Recovery HD partition was created. To see if it is there, launch Disk Utility, go to the Debug Menu, and select "Show Every Partition". That change will take effect immediately, and hopefully you'll see the Recovery HD partition listed (it will be "greyed" in color, but don't worry about that).

Assuming it is there, restart your Mac and hold down the Command and R keys. This page explains the process:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4718

Note that it says you can Verify and repair connected drives using Disk Utility. I believe it will say either just Disk Utility as one of the menu options, or something similar.

Thanks. I am waiting for a friend to bring his mac over so we can run Disk Utility externally. Will let you know the results

That's fine, but you should still see if the Recovery HD partition is on your machine. You can do that by launching Disk Utility, click on the Debug menu, and select "Show every partition". If it shows up, it will be greyed out. If you don't see it, let us know, as I know of two ways you can get that partition onto your machine.

When you launch Disk Utility, on the first screen that appears, at the very top, after the (black) Apple symbol, the following "Headings" appear:

Disk Utility File Edit Images Window Debug Help

Just click on Debug.
