MacBook Pro Issue

The other day and since then, my Macbook Pro has an odd issue.

As soon as I open any web page on Chrome, the web page will automatically scroll down to the bottom if there is a bottom. FB just keeps on going since it is so large, if I try to stop it by using the arrow keys up or down, that doesn't help. After a few minutes, something starts clicking fast, once I hit the ESC key, the clicking stops but it will start up again after a couple minutes.

As anyone ever experienced an issue like this ?

TIA

I have been using Chrome for more than a year, and never experienced such an issue (same with Opera and Firefox). In fact, Chrome works quite well for me.

Need to ask some questions:

1. What exact Mac OS are you running?

2. Do you have the latest version of Google Chrome?

3. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, from a software perspective? You actually can do quite a lot of disk cleanup on your own, and there are some excellent products available (both free and commercial) that can help you with those tasks.

4. This is critical: are you making backups to an external device? If you (hopefully) are, what software do you use for that?

5. Does this happen with another browser? Safari should already be inside your applications folder, and you can try either Firefox or Opera.

6. What do you mean by "FB just keeps on going since it is so large", and specifically, what does the "FB" mean?

1. High Sierra 10.13.6

2. Yes

3. Try to do it once a month

4. I am due for a backup

5. Does it in Safari as well.

6. FB = FaceBook, the page is so long like there is no end. It will keep going down to the date a person joined the site.

When you say "Try to do it once a month", what does that entail? And what software are you using for those tasks?

Not having a backup is not a good thing. You really need to start doing that as soon as possible. Time Machine is OK for backups, but I (and some others) prefer either SuperDuper! (that is what I use) or Carbon Copy Cloner. Either of those excellent products make a bootable backup/clone of your system. That's right, I said bootable. It's almost like having another machine.

You might want to try another browser (like Firefox or Opera), just to see if it happens with either of them.

There are some things you could do to check things, but without a backup, such processes could be risky.

The clicking sound would make me nervous! Does this MBP have a spinner or regular hardrive?
Due for a backup? Do it now while you still can.
Have you tried Disk Utily and run first aid?
You could also try Onyx avaiable here...........https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html

Give it a try, can't hurt.

Before you use Disk Utility to do any repairs to the internal drive, make a backup first! That is imperative.

Also, make sure you get the correct version of Onyx for the OS you are using.

Finally, Time Machine is OK, but SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner are better. You can use either of them in "demo/trial" mode. Here are sites for each one:

SuperDuper! - https://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

Carbon Copy Cloner - https://bombich.com/

Either of them make a bootable backup/clone of your system. That's right, I said bootable. It's almost like having a another machine.

I did advise him to backup on line 2 and the reason for Time Machine is it's free and already installed on his computer.
Clicking sounds are usually indicative of a failing hard drive which is why I asked if it was a spinner.
SuperDuper is a great program and I used it to clone my High Sierra installation before installing Mojave.
I basically keep anything I don't want to lose off the OS disk. Time Machine is backing me up as I type this
so if the drive died right now I would still have all my stuff right up to this point.

As usual, what works well for one does not necessarily apply to another individual. Myself, one a week backups with SuperDuper! are easily enough, and I don't need any incremental backups in between. Also, given how often I do disk cleanup (every day, especially with having deleted EMails permanently removed), along with the extensive disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs I do every Saturday, using Onyx and Tech Tool Pro, it works very well for me. As I have always said, I make a concerted effort to keep both of my Macs "lean, mean, and clean".

I have had only 2 or 3 occasions where I needed to do a restore between my weekly backups. Typically it was due to something occurring after the prior Saturday backup, and what I did in those cases was 1) boot the "troubled" Mac from the most recent SuperDuper! backup, 2) use Disk Utility there to Erase and Format the internal SSD, 3) did a fresh, clean installation of the Mac OS I had been using, and 4) "migrated"/copied needed good "stuff" from that most recent SuperDuper! backup. The only things I lost since that last backup was 1) any "kept" EMails (typically very, very few), 2) Quicken transactions input (I have a paper copy of m y check register), and 3) any software updates I had downloaded/done. Since not much of that occurred, it was not a burden to do a complete recovery.

As I mentioned, one can use either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner in "demo/trial" mode. I actually used SuperDuper! in trial mode for over a year before I paid for it. Nothing illegal, that's the way it was (maybe still is?).
