Macbook crashed, thinking about using Linux to recover personal files

This isn't for my computer, but my roommate's Macbook completely failed on him and turns on to a white screen. He also tried reinstalling the operating system several times (which failed) and now it boots to a picture of a folder with a question mark, which I understand to mean that there is no system folder. So, he's probably going to have to take it in to the Apple store but they couldn't tell him anything about keeping his files. I made a bootable Linux USB and started it up on his computer, but couldn't access any of his files (I got a message saying the filesystem type was not well-known). Would partitioning his drive (HFS+) and installing Linux allow me to access the data on the other partition and back it up to an external hard drive?

No.

If you want those files, connect it to another Mac, and boot it into Target mode.
