MacBook Charger--I need help!

I have a MacBook that is about 5 years old and it will not work if it is not plugged in. When it is plugged in, the battery identifier at the top says that it is charged (the plug icon thing) but the battery percentage says 0% and when it is unplugged, it turns off as if it is dead. Is this problem fixable? Thank you!
