mac wont start

Hey all I am in serious need of help. My mac book wont start. When I turn it on the mac logo shows up and nothing else happens I dont get a spinning gear. I tried starting it from a CD and the spinning gear shows and then after a while the spinning gear simply stops moving and nothing else happens. I tried starting it holding down shift. And again no spinning gear shows. Any help is welcome
