Hello,
Big problems, really big. Running Monterray.
Sr. Citizen, very, so please put up with me a bit.
Not that computer savvy anymore.

This am, when I went to get my Mail (Apple Mail I think), it said I couldn't
until I upgrade to newest version. So, I clicked on the upgrade box.

**Is this upgrade legitimate ?

I tried, but it had the screen showing it was updating, for over an hour.
Obviously hung up.

Now, upon doing a full re-starting, several tries, all I get is a totally black screen. Totally.
The mouse's arrow does show, though.

What is (likely) happening ? Virus ?

What should I do now ?
is there some kind of a "safe-mode" starting ?
should I click on the eMail upgrade again, assuming it shows again ?

Would be most appreciative for any (very explicit, please) help with this.
So very important to me to get going again; lots of medical "stuff," etc.

Thanks,
Bob

That does sound very suspicious. I have never encountered such a prompt. Apple Mail updates usually come with system or security updates and are transparent to the user. I need to know the exact model of your Mac so we can try steps to reset the system (e.g. SMC, PRAM, etc.).

Hi,

restart holding down the S key on the keyboard, an keep holding till you see a Apple logo. that should put you in "Safe mode" , stops all other things ut the main system loading...it should take no longer than a few seconds to 30 seconds.

if it does not appear, then hold the power button again till the computer shuts down again.

the repeats but this time holding the R key, and this should put you in recovery mode, where you can re-install the system.

I have never heard of Mail asking for an upgrade.. you may have gotten a fake message from a virus, and that is dangerous.

if and when you finally get a desktop up and running, run a Virus or malwear seeking program..

when asking for help, best to state the computer model and year, AND operating system version.

In a normal installation hang, and I have had a few, you may end up with a 'Kernel' Panic, depending on you model computer and OS..

many different models and OS's occasional have different methods that you can use to get back to a working desk top.
