Greetings All,
I'm very new member, both to this forum and to Mac.
A few minutes ago, I was searching online for images to use in my classroom.
I received the following message:

"The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus." Press OK to begin the repair process."
It looked perfectly legit! Of course in retrospect, "perfectly legit" means that I saw the safari logo. (oops)
In any case, I pressed "OK" and got another message, that I should download an app "mackeeperapp.mackeeperapp.
I didn't download the software. The notice I got said that my mac had been infected with something called "Tapsnake" Any advice?

Thanks So Much,
Marlene

No, do NOT download it! Mackeeper is the absolute worst piece of software out there. It causes so, so many headaches.

Tapsnake is just a scam designed to scare folk into downloading software they don't need, Mackeeper is notorious for going to seriously ridiculous lengths to trick us into installing it.

When I clicked on that link http://macsystemsaver.com bogus, it just said (in big letters/numbers) "403 Forbidden Access to this resource on the server has been denied!". So, it looks like you do not have to worry about it.

Also, based on your first post, you did not download the mackeeper app. But, to make you feel comfortable about that, you can do 2 things:

1. Assuming you use Spotlight for your searches, put "MacKeeper" in the search field. It should come up with something like "Not Found".

2. There is an excellent freeware program for detecting malware/adware called Malwarebytes. You can get it form here:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/sem/?sfc=sem-gs_b_us_en&gclid=CKvpq4z7gcsCFQiUaQod4lACIA

Not exactly sure if it will detect Mackeeper, but there could be other "garbage" that landed on your machine via your browsing activities.
