I had done some work on my new iMac and after migrating my files from my laptop to th iMac all of my new work was gone. Is any of it able to be recovered? Where is it? Why don't they tell you this will happen?

I have never seen Migration Assistant loose data. I'm guessing you migrated an account with the same name across and it replaced the user account on the iMac.

So you copied the files from your laptop over the files on your iMac.

Is any of it able to be recovered?
If this is what you did then no there is no recovery.
Where is it?
It would have been overwritten by the new User Account.
Why don't they tell you this will happen?
Did you carefully read what Migrating an account does, cause it did tell you.

Migration Assistant warns you if there is already an account with a matching name and gives you several options. Replace means REPLACE!
