logon display incorrect after startup

After restarting my MacBook Pro (OS Lion), 17", the logon display is 1/4 size and the rest of the display is just noise. Any ideas? I am a newbie with apple.

Once I logon all is well with the display.

Try a full shutdown and restart, there is a lot of housework done when shutting down.
