Lacie 1T external hard drive problem

I've previously only owned PCs but I decided to switch over to Macs. I had an external hard drive full of essential files that I was planning on switching over onto my Mac but when I plug my Lacie 1T external hard drive, it's read only. I've checked disc utility and it's formatted to NTFS which means I have to reinitialize it to work on my Mac however, if I reinitialize it, I lose all of my files.

Is there any way to reinitialize it without losing all my files? What should I do to insure I keep all of files on my external hard drive?

Nope, its a MicroSoft Proprietary format. You'll need to copy everything off, reformat, then copy it back on.
