Kernel panic and no startup on OSX Lion

My girlfriend purchased a MBP about 3 days ago, it came with Lion installed. Today she had a kernel panic, that prompted her to perform a hard restart. The computer will not fully boot, and we see the startup screen with the spinning progress wheel at the bottom. The computer is not booting into safemode (via holding shift) to perform updates. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this, how to overcome it, and how to remedy the problem.

its under warranty take it straight back, a kernel panic is not something to take lightly nor something you should try and fix on a Mac that age!!!
