Issue with imaging a disc

Hello. I am attempting to Image my OSX disc on an external hard drive to both have a backup on hand and run a second system of os 10 on the same computer, but whenever i use disck utitilty to restore the .dmg, it never shows up in the Starup disc Screen. ANy help would be great.
