Tis concerns my mother's computer, a rather aged MAc OS 10.4.11. I don't live near her, so I have been receiving many pone calls about her problems with iPhoto, which I said "yeah, I'll deal with it next time I see you," hoping it was something I could fix with little effort. Alas, it is not to be. Let's get down to cases:

There is a... problem with image duplication. Now, i am aware that there are commercial programs designed to sort duplications, but I feel my problem might be a little more acute. The library of photos is stored on an external hard-drive, and it appears to have bifurcated into two libraries, one 38GB, the other 27. Searching for an image shows as many as 31 copies, most of which are thumbnails. MAny of the photos, despite existing 31 times, are showing up within iPhoto as bank boxes. To further exasperate the issue, IPhoto has apparently started using old names for new photos, which is why the search for certain older photos shows the name being used for a photo from four years ago, and a photo from a few months ago.

Simply using a 'remove duplicate' program would end up removing the new, unrelated photos, no? Can anyone help this pressing issue?

Start iPhoto with Option Command and run through those tools before trying to fix anything.

If it is such a mess, it might be easier to export all the photos, make a new Library and drag them all in again. (Option startup lets you make a new Library)

Holding Option on startup merely hides all my other active applications, so I'm forced to assume I am Doing It Wrong.

hmm, maybe the version of iPhoto is to old.

Yes, it also hides active Apps.
