iPhone 4 music issue

Everything was fine until a day or so ago when I tried plugging in my iphone to my radio using the headphone jack. The sound played through the iphone speaker, but not the radio.

I tried plugging and unplugging repeatedly... same result.
I tried cleaning the headphone jack... same result.
I tried plugging in my headphones instead... same result.

So I decided to just use my bluetooth speaker instead. Same result. The phone recognized the device. The device recognized the phone ("bluetooth paired"), but still the music just played on the iphone speaker and not the external speaker.

Any ideas?

-Which model iPhone?
-Which version of iOS?
-Does it recognize when the headphone jack is connected - if you change the volume, does the pop-up show headphone jack?
-When you use the Bluetooth speaker, are you changing the audio output to use AirPlay/Bluetooth?
