I have an iPad Pro which is used exclusively for storing sheet music. Many of the files were scans from old music books, so the scans were often discoloured, or distorted and blurred where the spine of the book turned into the centre. There were also many where the music on the other side of the pages could be seen. All these files are saved as pdf files, as it’s easier to store and display them, and they fit properly on the screen so they can be played.
I decided to try to tidy up the appearance of the worst ones, using an Apple pen. It has made a fantastic difference, however, I then discovered that it vastly increased the file size, since you are effectively painting over the discoloured parts. An individual file would increase from maybe 1.5mb to 125mb! Not surprisingly, there is now not much storage left on my device, so I tried to think of a way of reducing file size, without losing resolution. I discovered if I exported a file to my MacBook, opened it there, selected ‘Print’, and chose ‘Scale’, then pdf again, it saved it as before but returned it to its original size. Then I’d send it back to my iPad to replace the large file, which I’d then delete.
All good! But I then noticed that rather than the available remaining storage increasing again, it was decreasing! So, I wondered if it was because I had not emptied the Delete folder, however, it is making no difference. The more large files I remove, and replace with much smaller ones, the less remaining I have.
Is my iPad storing these deleted files somewhere else that I don’t know about?
