ios8 crashed iphone5s

I installed ios8 on my iphone 5s and it crashed my phone, I was unable to power it on or do anything with it. I spent 2 hours on the phone with apple who could not resolve the issue and declared it to be a hardware problem. They sent me a replacement phone which I loaded with my backed up data. I am now afraid to update the software again as I fear a repeat of the problems. Dare I now upgrade to 9.1? (I'm certain this was not a hardware problem as the phone was fine prior to the update)

Sounds like it could have been a coincidental hardware issue when you attempted the update. Of course, we cannot guarantee anything, but I believe you would be safe to upgrade to 9.1. Just make sure you have a backup of all of your data.
