So I have a problem. First I'll lay down my that I am using a 2011 Mac Mini with the latest version of Mavericks on it. Ok now heres my problem.

I cannot connect to the internet, via browser or other internet enabled apps. I am able to ping servers through the terminals though.

I did actually delete some files I think are relevant. I first cancelled a memory activity in Activity Monitor that was associated with the root user. I was not using the app it was attached to I have not used for a long time (it was a netnanny daemon i think.) Internet continued to work. I then deleted two startup folders one for HotSpotSheild, and the other for NetNanny. Internet again, continued to work.

I then restarted, and internet has ceased to work, but pings go through. Any ideas? I think it might be a DNS issue, but honestly, I don't know.

Those files you deleted may or may not be responsible, HotSpotShield is a 3rd party app that secures your internet connection from hackers etc & NetNanny is a 3rd party parental control app.

Personally I would start with a call to your ISP's tech support team

Hello and welcome.

It sounds to me like there are still remnants of NetNanny and HotSpotShield being loaded at startup, causing the issue to reappear after a restart. When you stopped those processes via Activity Monitor, you did simply that, stopped them until restart.

I would do a Google search to find out how to manually uninstall those two apps totally, then see if the issue persists. There are probably still a few pieces of them still in the following locations:

Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support
Macintosh HD > Library > Extensions
Macintosh HD > Library > Filesystems
Macintosh HD > Library > LaunchAgents
Macintosh HD > Library > LaunchDaemons
Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
Macintosh HD > Library > PreferencePanes
Macintosh HD > Library > StartupItems

Let us know how you get on,

Thank you so much for your help. I have not tried anything yet but here is some more info

I deleted the startup folders via Clean My Mac 2, which might have been a problem. NetNanny, which i "uninstalled" a year ago by dragging the app into the trash. It's daemons and startup items continued to run.

Again, thanks for the help, I will post results of what I find. I will also try a different internet, from a desperate ISP

You could also check to see if the OS X Firewall is enabled and blocking:

Apple > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall

If it is on, turn it off.

Also, have you tried creating a test user, logging into it, and seeing if the issue persists?

Fire wall is off, that was not the problem. Created a test user and got the NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1 error in safari. Pings still going through.

I found a NetNanny file in the first file you suggested, deleted it, restarted and IT WORKS!!!! :D

Thank you so much! I am currently replying to you via the formerly broken computer. You rock!

Excellent...glad it's finally sorted!

Sorry I missed those files earlier, but at least we finally got to the bottom of it.

Enjoy,

Just-for-the-record … the uninstaller for NetNanny is in the installation .dmg

And there are seriously in-depth instructions for complete removal of HotSpot Shield here
