Inability to insert photo from photos into Word file

I updated to El Capitan recently. When, after not having done this for some time, I tried my familiar procedure of inserting a photo into a Word (for Mac) file, either through 'browse' or 'photo on file' I would be taken to a window with Photo Booth and just the few pics I had in that application. There was no route offered for quitting Photo Booth and so my time-honoured procedure of clicking on a Photos file was impossible. I can find alternative ways of inserting the photo, but this is not really the point. I need to know what has happened to a previously dependable function and how to restore it. Suggestions, please!
