Importing photos from iPhone to MacBook

Hi guys, having trouble here. Just back from vacation with 1300 pics on my iPhone 6 and for some unknown reason, having problems loading pics to MacBook pro. Plugged phone in and opened Photos and made new album but could not not upload pics. Been gone for 3 weeks so I did back-ups first and then plugged in phone. Not getting prompts to add new pics. Am I missing something? Thanks.

I finally got this resolved by increasing my amount iCloud for 99 cents/mo. and adding pics from my phone to this and it came into my MacBook pro the next day!!! It should not have come to that, I always have the system set to upload from phone directly to mac, oh well.
Next month we are all upgrading our phones and so I can hope the next time I upload pics from vacay they will happen for FREE.!!!
