imac dvd/cd doesn't read anything

it churns and churns then spits out the cd or dvd

i saw a posting that recommended to delete the

library/preferences/dvd files i did this
but software update doesn't find new ones, where can i get them?
or anything else I can try

What version of OS are you running ?

Does iTunes recognise CD's ?

itunes doesn't work either the minute i stick a cd in it churns and then
opens up the cd slot
