I recently purchased a beautiful refurbished MacBook Pro Using Sonoma 14.5
I hooked up the Seagate backup and downloaded an old version. of iCloud. I cannot remember the old password.
I would like to delete that version and use the same version of iCloud that I use on the rest of my Macs. Any help appreciated. If I have screwed up please let me know and what I should do to fix this. Thanks

Your post raises so many questions I don't know where to begin.

iCloud is not a file or an application. You cannot move or copy it. It is a "settings" window. How did you copy it from your backup? Where did you put it?

It can be duplicated, sort of, only by copying the entire operating system.

Just login to iCloud on your new MBP with your current Apple ID and Password then set your sync preferences the same as your other devices.

Ahh, I think I get it now. You "restored" a backup of another device on the Seagate to your new MBP. But it has your old iCloud settings and password which you don't remember.
If I've got this right you just need to sign out of iCloud then sign back in with your new Apple ID on the new device.

The problem with that may be that you will need your old password to sign out.
If so, you will need to remember your old password or erase the device and start again without copying your settings, just your files and apps.

Rodananne, thank you SO much! Now, please tell how to erase the device. I'm not that savvy. Thank you

When you copy settings from an old backup it may have some iCloud settings, but it wont sign you in automatically. So you don't need to worry about signing out of iCloud.

Since your Mac has Sonoma on it, you can go to the System Settings then on the left side click on General. Then on the right side select Transfer or Reset. Next click on Erase All Contents and Settings.... and follow the prompts to erase the user data.

This will reset the OS (not erase it) for you to set it up again..

Unless it's a clone. I didn't think that was likely though. Maybe we're talking about the Admin Password, not iCloud (Apple ID) password?

Tom H, are you referring to your Apple ID password or the Admin (Login) password you use when the device starts up?
