Hi,

First, a most sincere thanks for all the previous help over the years.
Am 84 now, and it sure doesn't seem to get any easier.
Have a desktop Mac, and running Mojave.

Made the biggest mistake with a pc that I have ever made when I tried to update all my "stuff" on iCloud.
Guess it was backing up all these years without my knowing it, and then the storage ran out, and they wanted a few $ more per month.
Figured it was worth it, although I'm pretty good about backing up to USB Memory Sticks periodically - Thank Goodness.

The iCloud program, instructions, interface, etc., in my humble opinion
is a totally mess, and certainly not user friendly.

Totally messed up most everything on my pc.

Am now trying to resurrect items.

Initial question are the icons that now show for the WORD documents I have.

It's a pix of a Lock icon, and underneath is says DOCX and some say XLSX.
Even when I back up from the Memory sticks, these are what appears.
Never had before.

What are they please, and is there any way to have the WORD documents icon as before, with the simple icon, and
perhaps also requesting a password ? But not these (new) Lock icons on everything. Will drive the wife crazy.

Thanks,
Bob

Hello,

docx - Microsoft Word document
xlsx - Microsoft Excel file

-Do you have Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) installed on your Mac? If so, which version?
-Were these files originally created on your Mac, or from another computer?
-The lock on the icon usually means the file's permissions are set for access by certain users.
-Can you access/download the files if you login to iCloud in Safari?

Hi Cory,

Thanks for all the help you've given me over the years.
Most appreciated, as I miss many of the nuances, it seems, these days.

iCloud really messed me up. Took hrs to get everything back.

So, I am absolutely, unequivocally thru having anything to do with iCloud.
Frankly, I think it's a mess of a program, poorly implemented.

But, I don't need it, and want nothing further to do with it.

Again, thanks for all the interest and help.

Not important, but do you have a link where I can cancel the automatic monthly payments
I "think" iCloud is taking out.
Small amount, so not really important, but if easy to cancel fully, I will.

Stay well, and best regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the kind words. I totally understand your frustration, as iCloud can be finicky at times.

You should be able to go to  > System Preferences... > iCloud and click Account Details to edit your account/payment details.

-Change iCloud preferences on Mac
-Downgrade or cancel your iCloud storage plan

If you cancel your iCloud Storage Plan, make sure you have any calendars/contacts/Safari bookmarks/documents/photos downloaded to your Mac so you don't lose them, which it sounds like you did already.
