iBook Tangerine Clamshell Battery Problems

I have a Tangerine iBook clamshell, originally with 3GB (now 20GB) which has faithfully served me for years. Although I have an iMac G5 deesktop I find the iBook is great for working on stuff away from home. Alas the battery now seems to suddenly not be charging, I've tried resetting the PMU to no avail, so I suspect the battery or the charging system is the problem. Before I shell out for a new battery does anyone have any advise for other lines of enquiry I should follow? I would hate to get the new battery and then discover the problem was something else. Equally I looove my iBook and would hate to have to give up on using it on trains etc.
