Ibook g4 trying to retore working os

Hey iv posted before about this,but I now have more questions,,,,my iBook g4 A1045 series stuck at the loading page then waits abit and turns off and I have been told I should reinstall the OS, and if its not that the HHD may be failing,I do not have the install disk but I have now got a new external HHD with the DMG OS leopard on it and I'm wondering how I can boot and reinstall from this by using safe or single user mode,,,,any help would be greatly appreciated in advance cheers

OK so I plugged it in and started up using. opt,con,shift,delete. To use external. Drive to boot and I get a flashing little folder with a question mark and finder. Then goes back to loading startup and turns its self off,like usually,,,,,,anyone
