How will iMovie accept quicktime?

I have videos from a picture camera that I want on DVD. The videos are in Quicktime and iMovie will not let me import. I have the Intel based Mac and I was only using the programs that it came with.

I have watched the turitorial and it shows that you can. For some reason it still will not let me. Anybody?

What is the file extension of the movie?
