How to tell if MacBook Air hacked?

I was on a random website on Google Chrome Incognito (nothing nefarious, just didn't want to junk up my browser history and was at work) when I noticed in the lower corner of the website a box appear with odd characters and then my cursor started to move. I wasn't touching the mouse, so panicked a bit and didn't wait to see what happened. I closed the browser window and disconnected the WiFi. I looked through the activity log and didn't find anything strange looking. So my questions are is it possible to be hacked by just viewing a site (I had not clicked any links or downloaded anything) and what should I be on the lookout for to know if my laptop was hacked?

Thank you to anyone able to respond!

A couple of questions, along with some suggestions:

1. What exact Mac Book Air model do you have?

2. What exact Mac OS are you running?

3. Are you making backups to an external device? That is so, so critical!

4. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, from a software perspective?

Now, there are a couple of excellent products available that you could use to check out your Mac:

1. The excellent freeware program Malwarebytes, available from here:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

Note that the free version is actually a 30-day trial of their Premium (ie, paid) version.

2. The excellent Virus Checker ClamXav, available from here:

https://www.clamxav.com/

Similar to Malwarebytes, ClamXav can be used in "trial" mode for 30 days.

That link above will give V2.15.3. If you are running High Sierra, OS 10.13.x, then you'll need instead to get the High Sierra only version of ClamXav, V2.15.4, available from here:

An update: I just ran both of those programs on my late 2012 Mac Mini, and Malwarebytes did find about 5 "obscure" files with "potential issues". One of them even was "connected" with Safari, which I hardly ever use. I removed those 5 "bad" files, and now both Malwarebytes and ClamXAv say my machine is clean.
