How to open .doc?

Greets,

My windozed-afflicted cousin keeps sending me <.doc> files. I used to use MacLink Plus to open them but would liketo avoid spending the $80 or $100 USD for it. Is there something else I could use to open <.doc> files on my MacBook Pro 10.4.6?

There are lots of Mac apps that open Word documents directly, like
Pages http://www.apple.com/iwork/
AppleWorks
Nisus Writer Express http://www.nisus.com/Express/

There are others, too. Better to invest in cool software than a utility that doesn't have much functionality anymore.

Hi there and welcome !

to add to rpphoto's excellent suggestion, you can also open .doc in TextEdit which is free on your Mac...

It does however lose some formatting...

I have iWork 05, pages does a good job of keeping the formatting.

You can also use Open Office.
