How to natively run app from remote Mac (same LAN)?

I'm new to Automator, so please be patient with me.

I have an old iMac on my LAN that runs a scanning/OCR program that is not compatible with my newer Macs.
I am trying to write an Automator application that will connect me to my old iMac and initiate the Automator application (on the old iMac) that signals my network multifunction machine to scan/convert to PDF/save file in old iMac/User/Public.

Essentially I will be using the old iMac as a slave to connect to the multifunction machine, scan the document, convert to PDF, and save it to a public folder.
I can then retrieve that file on any of my newer Macs. [All because HP won't support Mavericks]

All the newer Macs on my LAN run Mavericks 10.9.1.
The old iMac runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
The multifunction machine works great with 10.6.8 and the old iMac.

Everything I try attempts to open the Automator app from the old iMac on my newer machines (which obviously doesn't work, since the software needed for the app only lies in the old iMac).

search "linking programs across the network"
read up on how to do this with AppleScript.
You can also ssh into the remote Mac.
Automator doesn't do this.
