How do I remove icons from top of HD folder?

Two icons have appeared on my Macintosh HD folder, at either side of the search box. On the left side of the search box there is a jpeg photo and on the right side there is an MS Word document. When I click on the folder it often accidentally opens the Word document, even if MS Word is not active. This is really irritating.

Can anyone explain how I can remove these icons?

I've attached a screenshot of the top right corner of the Mac HD folder, showing the search box with a jpeg to the left of it and an MS word icon to the right. Hope this helps.

Hi,

When I click on the folder it often accidentally opens the Word document, even if MS Word is not active.

Have you boot camped if so then I can not offer advice.
If not possibly drag the two files onto the desktop and delete, as they may just be shortcuts to respective files.

Have double checked my two Macs and neither have what you describe.

I did bootcamp years ago, but I uninstalled it and have had a new hard disk installed since (it was installed at the Apple Store in 2011). This problem has only been happening for the past few months.

It's not possible to drag the files - they seem to be fixed where they are.

With a Finder window open, do the following:

-Click on View in menu bar
-Click on Customize Toolbar...
-In the window that drops down, click and hold on the default toolbar and drag it to where the current toolbar is
-When the cursor changes to a green circle with a + sign, let go
-Click Done

Let us know if that doesn't reset it to default.

Alternately...

You can hold the Command key, click and drag the icon off of the toolbar and it will disappear when you let go of the mouse button. (Similar to working with the Dock)

Thanks Cory. I've managed to install (or reinstall) the default toolbar and it seems to have done the trick. What a relief!
