How do I re-install Mac OS on an old Macbook?

I'm a PC user, but I recently got my hands on a used macbook which was going to be thrown away at work.

The problem is - I don't have any of the original disks that come with it, and I don't know the log in password.

If this was a PC, I know I could just torrent Windows, boot from it and re-install the OS. But I can't seem to do that with this. I thought I'd try torrenting a few different Mac OS and putting them on a DVD-R, then inserting them, pressing the boot key, etc. But nothing happened.

What can I do? Is there something I have to do differently?

Thanks in advance. :)
